A man has died after he was allegedly hit with a metal pole while reportedly walking his dog in a regional Queensland town.

The 78-year-old was one of multiple victims of a man’s alleged violent rampage in the town of Childers, central Queensland, on Wednesday.

Police said the man was walking on Whitebridge Road, North Isis, when a 36-year-old male in a silver sedan stopped and allegedly punched him in the head before hitting him with a metal pole.

He sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

Earlier, the same alleged attacker was driving a Subaru Liberty on North Street, Childers, when he stopped behind a Mitsubishi Pajero at a pedestrian crossing about 2.30pm.

“The Subaru has reversed into the Pajero,” Queensland Police said.

“The driver of the Pajero, a 65-year-old Howard man, got out to inspect the damage and the Subaru Liberty has reversed into him.

“The driver of the Subaru has then allegedly got out and punched the 65-year-old man multiple times in the head, before driving off.”

In a third incident, the Subaru stopped on Crescent Street, Childers, and the driver allegedly assaulted a 66-year-old man.

Police said passers-by restrained the alleged assailant and he was arrested soon after.

The same silver Subaru Liberty was allegedly involved in an earlier traffic crash on the Bruce Highway at nearby Glenorchy about 1.45pm.

The vehicle allegedly deliberately reversed into a Tesla. The driver of the Subaru verbally abused the driver of the Tesla before driving off.

Police said none of the victims were believed to be known to the 36-year-old.

The 65-year-old man was taken to Bundaberg Hospital with serious head injuries. The 66-year-old man was also taken to hospital with neck injuries.

Investigations continued on Thursday. Anyone with information or footage is urged to contact police.
