Dramatic footage released in hunt for drive-by gunman

Source: NSW Police

Police have released dramatic footage of a daylight shooting in Sydney’s south as they continue to hunt for a masked gunman who allegedly fired at three men from an SUV.

The vision from NSW Police shows an Audi SUV pulling up to a beachfront venue at Brighton Le Sands, a suburb near Sydney Airport, about 3pm on February 18.

It shows a man firing a gun at three men who were standing close to a parked car.

No injuries were reported but three cars and a building were riddled with bullet holes.

The brief video clip also shows the Audi fleeing the scene and the car later engulfed in flames in a nearby suburb.

Detectives are hoping to talk to a woman with long dark hair, wearing a black singlet at the time, who was seen speaking to the three men shortly before the shooting.

“In particular, we are wanting to speak to a female who was seen just prior to the shooting,” Taskforce Falcon Acting Commander Jason Smith said on Wednesday.

“She’s described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, thin build, with long dark hair. At the time she was wearing a black-coloured top.

“We believe that the woman that was at the scene with the men just prior to the shooting can assist us with our investigation.

“We are wanting to speak with her. We are trying to establish the circumstances of that meeting, what was said.”

Police are also appealing to the public to help track down the alleged drive-by shooter and another occupant believed to be in the car.

Smith said the February shooting was a “really disturbing incident”.

“That footage is quite confronting, but that is the reality of what we are faced with at Taskforce Falcon,” he said.

“To have people firing shots indiscriminately from a moving vehicle is something we will not tolerate and work around the clock to ensure those people are brought to justice.

“This is one of a string of really disturbing incidents occurring, public place shootings — we can’t have this happening on the streets of NSW.”

There have been a spate of public shootings across Sydney in recent weeks.

In mid-August, a man died in a gangland hit on two men outside a pub in Forest Lodge with a bullet narrowly missing staff.

A few days later, another man was shot dead in his car in Winston Hills.

There have been more than a dozen public shootings, arson attacks and kidnappings across the city since last Christmas, leading police to set up the 150-officer-strong Taskforce Falcon in May to crush the underworld warfare.
