They’re the hottest team in the A-League, but the Western Sydney Wanderers are desperately trying to keep a lid on their sudden spike in form.

Winless and tied to the bottom of the table after the first three weeks of the season, the reigning Asian Cup champions have now moved into a tie of second spot after extending their winning streak to three with a 3-0 romp over Melbourne City on Saturday.

However defender Scott Jamieson poured cold water on their hot run, saying the side were hardly concerned with the poor start to the year and are equally unmoved by their recent string of victories.

“We didn’t get the results at the start of the season, but we always believed in what we were doing was important,” he said on Monday.

“Three wins in a row is good, but we’re only early on in the season so we won’t get carried away.”

Jamieson was definitive in his belief that the squad had just as much faith in Tony Popovic’s system now than when the whips were out earlier on in the season.

“We feel we’re a very strong team and we’ll go deep into this competition regardless of whether we’d won three in a row,” he said.

“We believe in what we’re doing.”

Popovic’s unerring faith in marquee signing Federico Piovacarri also paid off after the former La Liga striker finally notched his first goal of the season on the weekend – albeit in controversial circumstances.

Just last week, Australian goalkeeping legend Mark Bosnic labelled the club’s recruitment of the ex-Inter Milan forward as a “disaster”.

However Piovacarri broke his duck when he got on the end of a cross from Dario Vidosic, who had been flagged offside in the build-up.

“I actually thought it wasn’t a goal. Just looking at it, I saw the linesman’s flag go up,” Jamieson said.

“But I also know that things go around in football and we’ve been on the end of a few wrong decisions.

“You’ve got to play to the whistle.”

With the monkey now off the back of Piovacarri, who netted six goals in 28 appearances at his most recent club SD Eibar in La Liga, Jamieson hopes there would be plenty more to come.

“They say when it rains, it pours. Hopefully Pio can go on a good run now. If he doesn’t, he’ll still contribute to the team and let others score,” Jamieson said.

The Wanderers next take on Wellington on Saturday.
