Geelong and Adelaide have reached an agreement over the trade of Patrick Dangerfield, with 19-year-old Cat Dean Gore the final piece of the puzzle.

The clubs have been working on a deal for wantaway Dangerfield for some weeks, and with the trade period opening on Monday morning, have sealed a deal.

“I sit here a very happy Geelong player. I’m very excited to join the club,” he told reporters on Monday.

“I grew up standing on a milk crate on the Moorabool Street wing watching guys like (Garry) ‘Buddha’ Hocking and Peter Riccardi.

“I’m certainly glad I have made the decision. This allows me to combine the two things I love most, family and football.”

“I have got 100-odd Dangerfields and other relatives around the Geelong and Surf Coast area,” Dangerfield said.

“It will be nice to surf and fish and then cruise into Geelong and play footy so there is a good work-life balance, I think.”

The 25-year-old’s future has been the subject of much speculation all year and Dangerfield said he was happy to confirm his anticipated move on day one of the trade period.

The Cats have slipped from the golden era of the mid to late 2000s, but there are now great expectations on the team to return to the finals after finishing 10th this season.

“When it comes to experiencing success and winning games of footy, it is never done on the back of one person,” Dangerfield said.

“No club can do that. It is done through hard work, a good work ethic and the contribution of an entire playing list.”

Dangerfield was taken with the 10th pick in the 2007 draft and played 154 games for the Crows and he said he “loved every minute” of his time in Adelaide.

“It was a great city to play football and I will look back with fond memories,” he said.

According to the AFL’s official website, the trade will see Dangerfield and pick 50 move to the Cats in exchange for Gore, Geelong’s first-round pick nine and second-round pick 28.

Adelaide’s head of football David Noble said the club was pleased to be able to trade for Dangerfield instead of allowing him to leave via free agency – a method that would have seen the Crows get far less in return.

“All along we were intent on doing what was in the best interests of our club, and we have been able to deliver the best possible outcome,” Noble said.

“Securing picks nine and 28 allows us to add some more quality talent to our playing list, while Dean is a young man who has the makings of a long-term player.

“I would also like to acknowledge Geelong for the professional manner in which these negotiations were handled.”

Scott Selwood to join brother Joel at Cats

Meanwhile, Scott Selwood has joined brother Joel at the Cats with West Coast to receive a draft pick as compensation.

Scott played 135 games for the Eagles after being drafted 22nd in 2007 and was named club champion in 2012.

“The West Coast Eagles have been a great football club to have been a part of over the last eight years,” the 25-year-old said.

“They gave me my first opportunity and I’ll always be grateful.

The midfielder has battled ankle injuries over the past two seasons and did not play for the Eagles in this year’s preliminary final or the grand final.

West Coast’s general manager of football Craig Vozzo said in a statement the club understood Selwood’s reason for returning to his home state.

“Obviously we would have preferred that Scott had continued with the club, but we do understand his reasons,” Vozzo said.

“We rate Scott very highly, both as a player and an individual.

“He is a strong leader and that is why he has been a vice-captain and part of our leadership group for the last few years. He also won the club champion award in 2012 so he is a quality player.

“We wish Scott every success as he moves into the next phase of his career.”
