Two American sports broadcasters have given their opinion of Aussie Rules football and their ridiculously uninformed response will have you cringing while you watch.

The ESPN Sportcentre hosts introduce AFL as a “mix between rugby and mugging someone” and then give their take on highlights from recent AFL games.

Anchors Robert Flores and Kevin Connors call Australia’s most famous club Collingwood, “Collingworth” and judge Travis Cloke’s ‘dont-argue’ fend off as a “stiff arm”.

They also dub Carlton footage to comedic music and take particular enjoyment in the way commentators Dwayne Russell and Brian Taylor call games.

You might not know that when ESPN launched as a 24 hour dedicated sport network in America, many thought the concept wouldn’t work.

Doubters simply said there wasn’t enough sporting content for the channel to be contained. In 1979 ESPN signed a contract with the Victorian Football League and broadcast hours and hours of live and tape delayed Aussie Rules matches.

Who would’ve thought: suburban Australian footy was a key cornerstone that ESPN was originally based on.

Given that fact, maybe the people employed there now might know a little bit more about our brilliant game! Although many down under are probably still confused to no end by gridiron.
