A male guard at a Perth women’s prison has been suspended from duties after an inmate fell pregnant, authorities have confirmed.

An investigation into an “alleged consensual sexual relationship” between the pair at Bandyup Women’s Prison was underway, the Department of Corrective Services said.

Medical staff reported the 31-year-old’s pregnancy to prison authorities.

“The department took immediate action as soon as it became aware of the allegation, launching an investigation,” a corrective services spokesman said.

“While the investigation is ongoing an officer has been suspended from duty (precautionary measure), this does not necessitate that the officer is guilty of any wrongdoing.

“The department expects the investigation will take at least five months.”

In Western Australia, it is not illegal for guards to have sex with prisoners, but it is against prison regulations.

The matter has been reported to the Corruption and Crime Commission.

The department said the female offender was receiving care and support.
