A woman who was found dead in an alleged double murder in Melbourne was five months pregnant with the child she thought she’d never have, it has emerged.

Athena Georgopoulos, 39, and her partner of three years, Andrew Gunn, 50, were allegedly killed at a home in Mount Waverley, Melbourne, on Monday night.

A homeless man, 34, was charged with two counts of murder late on Tuesday. He will appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

It has been reported that Gunn was decapitated and his head mounted on a spike.

The gruesome crime scene was discovered when police responded to a call from a neighbour who heard yelling at the property about 9.20pm.

Graffiti could spray-painted on the side of the home and along a timber boundary fence read “Enough is enough” and “Karma”.

Footage from Nine News showed a man wearing black pants and an apparently bloodied white T-shirt being arrested.

Athena’s family told media outlets the 39-year-old daughter of a Greek migrant family had been with her unborn child’s father for three years.

“Recently, we found out she was pregnant, and she was so happy,” her aunt, Patty Dilveridis, told The Age.

“I spoke to her the other night at [her mother] Petty’s house. She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 [and] she never thought she could have one.”

Athena, who worked in customer service, was reportedly the primary carer for her mother, Petty, who told The Age: “She helped me so much”.

Police received a call from a concerned neighbour at 9.20pm, homicide squad detective Dean Thomas said on Tuesday.

A second call followed, suggesting the incident was “more urgent”. Officers arrived at 9.50pm to find the two bodies.

Local police and detectives identifies the 34-year-old suspect. He was arrested at Westall Railway Station, about six kilometres away, with two large dogs, at 1.40am on Tuesday.

Investigators believe he arrived at the home before there was an altercation, leading to the deaths of Georgopoulos and Gunn.

Police are still piecing together the connection between the arrested man and the deceased, but it is believed he knew Gunn.

“We’ve still got to link that up and, obviously, when we talk to him during the course of the day, that will become more obvious to us,” Thomas said.

“We are not looking for anybody else in relation to this incident.”

He said investigators were still examining the crime scene and the extent of the injuries to the dead couple. Weapons were used but not a gun.

No one else is believed to have been at the home during the incident, nor was it a robbery.

Thomas reassured the community the incident was contained.

“It appears to be a targeted attack … It does not appear to be a random attack,” he said.
