E-bike number-plate proposal reignites national debate

A push to introduce number plates on shared e-bikes is reigniting a national debate over e-bike regulation.
The proposal, being considered in New South Wales, would require visible ID plates on all shared e-bikes to help authorities track riders and respond to reckless behaviour.
Supporters say it could improve public safety and deter dangerous riding in busy urban areas, while critics argue existing GPS tracking already provides sufficient accountability.
Concerns are being echoed across the country, where councils continue to report complaints about e-bikes speeding on footpaths, poor parking, and near-misses with pedestrians.
E-bike safety educator Ben Horwood said visibility changes behaviour.
“If you didn’t have a number plate… would you be that concerned about speeding? It’s the same with kids — once they realise they are identifiable, it changes behaviour.”
