The NSW government has urged people to stop car-surfing after this dangerrous trend killed three people between 2012 and 2016 and injured another 130.

The most recent to suffer was a 17-year-old girl who was riding on the front of a sedan in a suburban street in Panania late on Wednesday night who was badly injured when she fell and hit the ground.

She sustained a broken collarbone and head and hip injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Transport for NSW is trying to warn young people of the dangers of car surfing.
“Under no circumstances should people take part in these kinds of illegal and dangerous activities,” road safety centre executive director Bernard Carlon said in a statement on Friday.

“It leaves them extremely vulnerable as they are completely unprotected – especially if they fall or are hit by a vehicle.”

Between 2012 and 2016 three people were killed and 130 were injured “while riding in or on a car in a non-seating/non-goods area position”, Transport for NSW statistics reveal.

A witness who helped the 17-year-old in Sydney’s southwest on Wednesday said the teenager was bleeding heavily in the middle of the road.

“She was on the ground, blood on the head,” she told the Nine Network.
“She was very scared (and) didn’t look in a good way.”

The allegedly intoxicated 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and charged with low-range drink driving. He’s due to face Bankstown Local Court on August 16.
