Business across NSW and Victoria were thrown into chaos on the last day of the financial year Thursday as Telstra was hit by yet another network outage.

Major retailer including Officeworks, Myer, The Good Guys and Medibank were all reportedly hit, along with Jetstar airline, ME Bank, Monash University and the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS).

The outage, Telstra’s seventh this year, a day after CEO Andy Penn announced a $250 million program to improve the carrier’s infrastructure.

Shortly before 10 pm Thursday, Telstra announced it had solved the issue.

“Business and enterprise services affected by today’s disruption are back online,” the telco said in a statement. “We’re very sorry to all those impacted.”

In Melbourne, public transport users were hit when the sections of the city’s myki ticketing system was affected.

A Public Transport Victoria spokesman said myki users were also unable to top up their cards through their call centre.

Hospitals and nursing services affected

Most troubling was the problems it caused for the RDNS, which visits aged and vulnerable patients in their homes.

“This has affected our visits to many of our clients’ homes, many of whom are elderly,” RDNS spokesman John Allin told AAP.

“We sincerely apologise for delayed or missed visits but we are confident that our scheduling will return to normal as soon as the Telstra issue’s rectified.”

Elsewhere, Melbourne’s Mitcham Private Hospital and the Royal Melbourne Hospital were impacted. 

Telstra said it was aware of the issues affecting its corporate customers in Melbourne and was looking to resolve it.

“We are aware of an issue impacting some business and enterprise customers in Victoria,” a Telstra spokesperson said in a statement. “We are investigating the cause and working to restore services as soon as possible.”

The $250 million upgrade

On Wednesday, Mr Penn announced Telstra was spending $250 million to improve the networks, but not outside its normal $4 billion capital expenditure program.

Telstra has had several outages this year affecting its mobile and fixed network.

Earlier, Telstra users in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane reported being affected according to reports on social media, but Telstra only confirmed a problem in Victoria.

Thursday’s outage came a day after Telstra briefed journalists about a $250 million program to improve the ailing network.

Australian network outage tracking website “Aussie Outages” showed the most widespread coverage losses were in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

The outage is the fifth significant network disturbance for Telstra in 2016.
