The body of a Melbourne woman Maria Strydom who died climbing Mount Everest has reportedly been retrieved from the mountain and could be be transferred to Nepal capital Kathmandu within days.

Seven Summit Treks told the ABC that Ms Strydom’s remains had been recovered after some doubt about whether or not the Melbourne climber’s could be brought home.

Dr Maria Strydom, 34, who died on Saturday, was close to the summit before being struck by altitude sickness. She later died as the illness took hold.

Her husband, Dr Rob Gropel, 36, also suffered altitude sickness and was flown to the Nepalese capital on Monday. He was discharged from hospital on Monday.

The expedition company confirmed it had also retrieved the body of another climber from the group, Dutchman Eric Arnold, who made it to the summit, but later died.

Her mother, Maritha, had previously expressed her hope that her daughter’s body would be retrieved from the mountain as well as her disappointment with the trekking company’s lack of communication with her in the days following Dr Strydom’s death.

Maritha commented on the Facebook statement with: “We never had … any contact from anyone from your company, now, almost 48 hours after my daughter’s death. I want her body back.”
