A 13-year-old boy has been killed after crashing a moped into the back of a parked semi-trailer in Sydney’s west.

Police said the boy was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal head injuries.

A truck driver called emergency services to Tyrone Place at Erskine Park about 3:10am, police said.

“The boy suffered significant head injuries,” a NSW Police statement said.

“He was treated by police and ambulance paramedics, however died at the scene.”

The street is on an industrial estate and a popular rest stop for truck drivers.

Local truck drivers say it is also a prime spot for joyriders and drivers doing burnouts.

Police said the boy was with two others at the time of the crash.

It is understood that the boys were the teenager’s brother and cousin.

“It’s believed the boy was with another teenager, aged 17, at the time of the crash who ran from the scene prior to the arrival of police, to seek help,” the police statement said.

“A third boy, aged 16, remained at the scene.

“Both teenagers continue to assist police with their investigations.”

The 17-year-old boy had ran and asked the truck driver and a nearby security guard to alert police.

Chief Inspector Tracy Stone said police commenced CPR until paramedics arrived but were unable to save the boy.

“The injuries were significant enough that he has died after CPR at the scene,” she said.

Boys’ risk-taking behaviour a concern: police

Chief Inspector Stone said the boy’s death was a tragedy.

“It’s tragic not only for the family but the greater community,” she said.

“I know that it has impacted that child’s school and they’re dealing with the situation at this point in time.

“Young boys [engaging] in risk-taking behaviour is of concern for the police.

“We would hope that they would consider these risks before taking them on.”
