Flash flooding could occur in some parts of Victoria’s north on Thursday.

A low pressure system and humid air have dumped around more than 20 millimetres of rain around Bendigo, Hopetoun and Shepparton.

Senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, Richard Carlyon, said the rain would continue throughout the day, with a chance of heavy falls in the Wimmera and Northern Country.

“There could be severe thunderstorms, particularly as it’s such a humid air mass,” he said.

“If the storms are slow moving there is a chance we could see some flash flooding, but if the storms get organised we could also see some large hail and damaging winds.”

He said parts of parts of Victoria’s north and west were receiving a much-needed soaking, after a dry start to spring.

“It something we haven’t seen for the last few months,” he said.

“October was very dry, as was September – and we sort of missed out on our normal spring rainfall.

“It will tend to ease in the west later in the day but particularly through northern Victoria this morning and about the ranges, there’s likely to be steady rain.”

A flash flooding warning is current for parts of the Mallee, North Central, North East and South West forecast districts.
