Wallabies star David Pocock, tipped as best player of the World Cup, is also in the running for snarkiest comeback on the internet.

On Thursday, the athlete lampooned no less than Australia’s former prime minister for his tough, some might say ruthless, stance on immigration.

Tony Abbott told a conservative audience in London that Europe must replicate his policy of ‘turning back the boats’ or risk catastrophe.

“Implicitly or explicitly, the imperative to love your neighbour as you love yourself is at the heart of every western polity,” the ex-PM said.

“But right now this wholesome instinct is leading much of Europe into catastrophic error.”

Despite being deep in preparations for the World Cup final, Pocock took the time to fire off a sarcastic online response.

“You must’ve missed the translation that says ‘love thy (white) neighbour’,” the rugby player posted on Twitter.

Just to be sure his sarcasm cut through, Pocock included a video of comedian Will Ferrell impersonating another conservative politician, former US president George W Bush.

In the video, Bush prays to a “life of the party” Jesus Christ who walks around in “cool” rubber Crocs and slurps diet soft drink — a dig at Bush’s intelligence.

Pocock, who will take to the field against New Zealand on Saturday morning, is known for his vocal left-wing views.

He made headlines in 2013 when he refused to get married until same-sex marriage was legal.

He was also arrested in 2014 for chaining himself to machinery to protest the Maules Creek coal mine in NSW.
