Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has bemoaned the lack of “excitement” on grand final eve during a peaceful tram ride in Melbourne.

The public transport-friendly PM tweeted that things were unusually quiet on the new public holiday in Victoria, just a day before the city’s biggest day on the calendar.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews controversially introduced the public holiday after winning the election this year.

“Very peaceful trip on no 11 tram – eerily quiet on a public holiday!” he tweeted.

“Miss the people & excitement of grand final eve.”

According to the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the public holiday will cost the state an estimated $500 million.

Fairfax also pointed out that a man pictured next to the PM on the tram was ironically reading an article about Tony Abbott’s comments the previous day.

Mr Abbott told 3AW that he believed the Coalition would still have won the next election, had he not been removed from the job.

It is not the first time Mr Turnbull has used his penchant for public transport to make a point to a political rival.

In July, amid the Bronwyn Bishop “choppergate” saga, Mr Turnbull tweeted how he was catching the V-Line train to Geelong.

Mr Turnbull is in Melbourne for engagements around the AFL Grand Final on Saturday.
