Vocal questioner of vaccination Michael Leunig has seemingly ridiculed the ‘pixie’ science of immunising children against disease.

On Wednesday morning, his syndicated Leunig cartoon published in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers was entitled ‘Immunisation’ followed by three exclamation marks.

Depicting a jolly group of “pixie scientists”, its caption could be interpreted either as mocking the medical community’s attempts to protect young Australians, or criticising it for not trying to eradicate more important “epidemics” — such as cruelty, arrogance and power-hungriness.

In a recent interview, Mr Leunig denied he has taken a public position on the issue.

“The position I’m taking is, do we just sweep aside the mothers who, in great conscience and real intense intelligence and research feel they just can’t go ahead with [vaccination]? Should we demonise them? Criminalise them? Should the whole society make them feel a pariah?” he told the ABC.

“I think it’s a very significant moment when you ask the maternal instinct to absolutely step aside and accept what the state or what the conventional wisdom is saying.”

This is the second of Mr Leunig’s recent cartoons to question the mainstream medical view of vaccinations, which are deemed crucial for almost all children to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
