The director of child safety at Education Queensland, Brett O’Connor, has appeared in a court in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, on 10 child sex charges.

O’Connor is charged with 10 counts of indecent and sexual assault.

Police allege the 52-year-old assaulted two 12-year-old boys when he worked as a teacher at schools at Hunters Hill and Campbelltown in Sydney in the 1980s.

Education Queensland suspended O’Connor from his role as director of child safety in March, when he notified them of the changes.

In the Tweed Heads Local Court Monday morning, O’Connor’s lawyer Phillip Mulherin applied for a suppression and non-publication order on his client’s identity, saying further media coverage would cause stress and embarrassment.

However, the magistrate denied the request.

The case was adjourned.

O’Connor, who remains on bail, is due to appear before the Campbelltown local court in June.
