Eleven days of speculation as to whether or not American pop princess Taylor Swift’s hit song Shake It Off would make it into the Triple J Hottest 100 has come to an abrupt end.

Swift fans were left outraged on Monday after hearing she had been disqualified from the ABC’s classic Australian summer music countdown, turning to social media in droves.

Last week The New Daily reported that Swift and her song had been championed in a #Tay4Hottest100 social media campaign, in which thousands of her fans voted for her song to win the competition.

The decision to disqualify Swift was announced by Triple J presenter Lewis McKirdy before the countdown had begun at midday on Monday.

“First I need to address something and it’s important, we haven’t addressed it yet. Taylor Swift. That’s what I’m talking about. Is she in this list?” teased McKirdy, before playing a ‘wrong answer buzzer’ sound effect to indicate Swift had been disqualified.

“That abrasive noise would suggest not. She’s out for a whole range of reasons. All of them are at a website that we’ve set up. If you want to go there, it’s call triplejfeed.com.”

That website crashed almost immediately.

Set up like popular site Buzzfeed, which was supporting the #Tay4Hottest100 hashtag, the Triple J page was titled ‘8 Hilarious But Totally True Reasons You Won’t Hear ‘Shake It Off’ In The Hottest 100″.

The station said the campaign had failed to get Swift to the top of the poll and had only garnered enough support to reach number 12.

“As Buzzfeed’s intrepid reporters have pointed out, ‘triple j regularly likes to tout the Hottest 100 as the world’s biggest music poll’.

“They’re right: we do, and it is! Which is why we weren’t too surprised that they wanted to get involved with this year’s countdown.

“But their #Tay4Hottest100 campaign bought Tay a one way ticket to Bansville instead,” the Triple J page said.

“Whilst their advertisers enjoyed the sweet page views, it’s not legit for other media to try and troll the poll.

“As a result, it became pretty clear, pretty quick that a lot of people just wanted to prod some ‘hipsters for the lulz’. The Hottest 100 has as low a tolerance for trolls as it does for non-organic heirloom carrots.”

It went on to say: “More like #Tkay4Hottest100. Eighteen-year-old Adelaide rapper Tkay Maidza made it into the list at #100. Imagine if that didn’t happen because a joke Buzzfeed campaign got a song that triple j never played onto the list instead. You know what that would be? It’d be a travesty.”

“Taylor Swift got played on triple j a total of 0 times in 2014, adding to her cumulative total of 0 plays since we started as a radio station in 1975. Luckily, other Australian radio stations picked up the slack and played Shake It Off 13,511 times (and counting!) since it was released in August.

“We ain’t even mad. To be clear, triple j doesn’t have beef with Taylor Swift. She’s smart, she’s cool, she’s successful, and she has great taste in BFFs.”
