Security committee meets over Martin Place siege

The National Security Committee of Cabinet has held an emergency meeting in response to the siege taking place at a cafe in Sydneyâs Martin Place.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott confirmed the briefing in a statement and described the hostage scenario as a âdeeply concerning incidentâ.

The Coalition leader tried to allay public fear, saying law enforcement were âwell trained and equippedâ for the incident.
âThis is obviously a deeply concerning incident but all Australians should be reassured that our law enforcement and security agencies are well trained and equipped and are responding in a thorough and professional manner,â Mr Abbott said.
âI have spoken with NSW Premier Mike Baird and offered him all possible Commonwealth support and assistanceâ.
Thirteen people are believed to be held hostage in the cafe.
New South Wales Premier Mike Baird said his thoughts and prayers were with the members of the public.
âAll my thoughts and prayers are with those members of the public affected by the situation in Martin Place and the NSW Police who are trained to deal with these events,â Mr Baird said in a statement.
