Harry Potter star Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding.

The British actor, who played child witch Hermione Granger for a decade, was clocked at 61km/h in a 50km/h zone in her blue Audi S3.

The London Evening Standard reports Watson was driving on a restricted road when a speed camera caught her on July 31 last year.

The 35-year-old, who has taken a break from acting to go to uni, was fined £1044 ($2144) at High Wycombe Magistrates Court on Wednesday (UK time).

Watson already had nine points on her licence before the speeding incident, the court heard.

It was reportedly her fourth driving offence in less than two years, with previous infringements in October 2023, November 2023 and January 2024.

She did not attend the five-minute hearing.

Her lawyer, Mark Haslam, told the court Watson was a student but was able to pay the fine, reports the Standard.

On the same day, one of Watson’s co-stars in Harry Potter And the Philosopher’s Stone was also banned for six months for a similar offence.

Zoë Wanamaker, 76, who played Quidditch teacher Madame Hooch, was caught speeding on the M4 motorway in south-east Berkshire last August.

Wanamaker was driving her blue Volvo at 74km/h in a 65km/h zone, the court heard.

She was fined £1044 and her lawyer, Duncan Jones, did not ask for “special treatment”.

Watson has been studying at Oxford University since 2023, reportedly completing her master’s degree in creative writing and pursuing a DPhil (the Oxford equivalent to a PhD).

She decided to take a break from acting in her 30s, having grown up in front of the camera in the Harry Potter franchise.

Watson also starred in Beauty and The Beast (2017) and Little Women (2019).

“Because I’m in a career that moves very quickly, the decision to take time to do these things felt like a very big decision,” she told British Vogue.

“[Choosing] to go back and write and study and get behind the camera was terrifying for me because I’d never done it before.

“I had always been in front of the camera; I’d always been an actor.”

Last month, Watson was photographed on the Thames River, taking part in a university rowing competition as a coxswain.
