Rust actor Alec Baldwin says Americans are âuninformed about realityâ.
The star has put the people of the US on blast, claiming they âknow little or nothingâ about world issues affecting everyone around the globe.
âThereâs a hole, a vacuum ⌠a gap in information for Americans,â Baldwin said at the Turin Film Festival in Italy in a video shared by The Hollywood Reporter.
âAmericans are very uninformed about reality, whatâs really going on â climate change, Ukraine, you name it.
âAll the biggest topics in the world, Americans have an appetite for a little bit of information.â
The 66-year-old actor argued that âinformation in Americaâ is a âbusinessâ, and there is a gap in the peopleâs knowledge.
Baldwin insisted this was where Hollywood and the wider movie industry came in.
âThat vacuum is filled by the film industry,â he said.
âNot just the independent film industry, not just the documentary film industry â which are very important around the world â but narrative films as well, where the filmmakers and the buyers, the studios and the networks and the streamers are willing to go that way.â
On Hollywood as a whole, Baldwin said it was a âgood thingâ to have more women directing films, but insisted there was still a nuance to the issue.
âOf course, for some films you need an energetic director who moves the camera continuously, and maybe a male director is better,â he said.
âBut for a comedy or a drama with a lot of talk, whatâs the difference between a male director and a female director?â
Elsewhere in the press conference, the star addressed his hopes for Donald Trumpâs new administration, as he insisted the US president-elect has âmany challenges to faceâ.
He singled out âthe environment, the problem of plastic, of permafrostâ as âreal problemsâ that need addressing, along with embracing renewable energy while accepting that oil and gas still have a place.
