Chris Hemsworth surprised a crowd of about 70,000 people and showed off his latest talent when he joined UK singer Ed Sheeran on stage as a drummer on the weekend.

Hemsworth, 41, who learned the drums from scratch for the performance, helped perform the song Thinking Out Loud at Sheeran’s concert in Bucharest, Romania.

The appearance was filmed for the upcoming second season of the Australian’s Disney+ National Geographic series, Limitless, which follows the actor as he takes on challenges to combat ageing and live a healthier life.

In a video shared to Instagram, Sheeran revealed that Hemsworth learned how to play the drums to join him on stage, adding that the Limitless episode would explore cognitive health and how “learning to play an instrument” can be beneficial.

“Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it a lot,” Hemsworth says as he air drums. “It would be nice to put this one to bed.”

Hemsworth and Sheeran have been friends for several years.

The Australian congratulated Sheeran in June last year for breaking the stadium record at New York’s MetLife Stadium, surpassing a record set by Taylor Swift the previous month with 89,106 fans.

In the post, Hemsworth described himself as a “borderline stalker” of the British pop star.

“Saw Ed Sheeran for the 3rd time this year. Some say I’m a super fan, others say I’m a borderline stalker … mostly Ed says that actually, but hey I’m just a really supportive mate. Congrats on breaking stadium records once again, champ,” he wrote.

Hemsworth, a father of three, received some unsettling health news in the first season of Limitless in 2022, when after undergoing genetic testing, the Australian star was told he is eight to 10 times more likely than the average person to develop Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia.

The second season of Limitless, to be released in 2025, will follow Hemsworth as he “physically and mentally delves into a series of universal issues that people across the world face daily: Pain, fear, cognitive impairment and social connection”, according to Disney +.
