A senior interior designer with a major Australian home builder believes a feature wall can fulfil a number of useful and aesthetically pleasing functions.

Metricon designer Jacinta Evans says a feature wall can be a backdrop to any artwork and can enhance an otherwise simple and plain room.

Ms Evans adds that they can generate interest in a room and “can highlight or help create a theme” in a home’s interior.

“They are also a great way to disguise imperfections in any older homes,” she says.

The designer says feature walls can be created simply by using various types of wallpaper.

“Natural element-inspired wallpapers such as concrete, bricks and timber create a bold backdrop and are also a great solution to introduce for anyone wanting a look of natural materials without the cost,’’ Ms Evans says.

“Bold geometric or prismatic pattern wallpapers can highlight a contemporary look in any interior.’’

The Metricon spokeswoman says heavier materials such as timber cladding can provide “the perfect warm touch to any bedroom or living space’’.

“Their rich walnut tones and tactile approach allow them to mimic the transition of indoor to outdoor,’’ she says.

Wall murals are also becoming “hugely popular’’ options for feature walls.

“They create an immediate style for your interior, and you can make a space feel quite personal by using a mural wallpaper to create a piece of large art on your wall,’’ she says.

Ms Evans suggests floor-to-ceiling mirrors to help create a sense of space in your home.

“We tend to use a bronze tint or smokey grey mirror (in display homes), as they tend to create a subtle backdrop and don’t have the bright intensity of a standard mirror colour;’’ Ms Evans says. “This ensures a more subtle mood.’’

Ms Evans says those wanting to use paint for their special wall can employ subtle geometric shapes from numerous pastel paint tones to create a feature.

“Another popular technique is to use blackboard paint for a feature wall to create a fun environment for kids, but this can also have a practical application when used in a kitchen area,’’ she says.
