The Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet is quite possibly the best-dressed of the year.

Stars are more relaxed when on the French riviera in the heat of summer, making more adventurous style choices than they do at stuffy American events.

However, there remains a strict dress code – even if it’s an unspoken one. The event calls for all-out glamour, several outfit changes, plenty of colour and lashings of sparkles.

Last year, festival officials controversially turned away some female attendees for turning up on the red carpet and not wearing high heels – a rule Julia Roberts flouted this year when she arrived at the Money Monster premiere barefoot.

And really, isn’t that what Cannes is all about? Channelling the French and being nonchalant and bold whilst remaining chic?

While the festival still has over a week to go, here’s who has delivered and who has disappointed so far.

Best dressed

Blake Lively: The undisputed Queen of Cannes, this golden-limbed, tousle-haired blonde beauty ensures all eyes are on her at all times thanks to her colourful, kooky outfit choices.

From a bright red jumpsuit to a mustard velvet sundress and her show-stopping golden Versace gown at the premiere of her new film Cafe Society, Lively delivered the kind of Cannes-do attitude we were hoping for.

Oh and, by the way, she’s pregnant. Kudos.

Bella Hadid: The American model only made one red carpet appearance at the festival but, boy, did she make the most of it! In shimmering Roberto Cavalli, the 19-year-old looked completely flawless and ultra glamorous.

The ladies in yellow: Sunny shades of lemon were a popular choice, making them pop against the sea of black tuxedos. Thankfully, none of the flaxen ladies put a foot wrong, each doing the shade justice in their own way. Our favourite? Kirsten Dunst doing Mad Men chic.

Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon: The good friends hit the red carpet twice together and their playful antics and complementary outfits made them the perfect pairing. While Sarandon opted for structured, androgynous looks and fabulous sunglasses, Watts chose classic old school Hollywood glamour. They were like modern-day Katharine Hepburn and Grace Kelly.

Worst dressed

Kristen Stewart: First of all, we’re by no means saying K-Stew doesn’t look cool. Her new blonde hair is edgy and the whole punk-rock aesthetic is sort of her thing. However, Cannes would have been the perfect time for her to try something different. While her all-white look is a step in the right direction, her other outfits swamp her slender frame and aren’t exactly occasion appropriate. She gets points for being herself, but Cannes calls for more.

Julianne Moore: While Moore certainly delivered on the sparkle front, her main issue is cut. Each of these looks has plenty of potential to be spectacular, but each has one too many things going on. Moore’s striking beauty would have benefitted from sleeker silhouettes and a bit more colour.

Vanessa Paradis: Given this stunning songstress is French, Cannes should be her time to shine. Unfortunately, there was something a bit … off about Paradis’ two festival looks. Her pastel lace gown didn’t appear to fit her properly, while her patterned sundress was too casual and didn’t match the accessories she paired it with. She’s cool enough to pull it all off, but that doesn’t mean she should try.

The trouser brigade: While Blake Lively’s red look managed to work thanks to its relaxed draping and bright colour, two other jumpsuit contenders failed to deliver. Victoria Beckham’s harem pants looked awkward, while Julia Roberts’ ill-advised pin-stripe onesie was a bizarre choice for a woman who usually opts for classic and elegant clothing.
