Waleed Aly breaks silence on Today show gaffe

Waleed Aly has revealed Today show host Lisa Wilkinson apologised to him for cracking a joke skin colour after his Gold Logie nomination.
Speaking to Kiis FMâs Matt Tilley and Meshel Laurie on Wednesday, Aly said he was happy to treat the incident â also involving Wilkinsonâs co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Ben Fordham â as an unfortunate gaffe.
After the Gold Logie nominations were announced last month, the hosts landed themselves in hot water for some ill-advised banter about the racial diversity of the nominees.

âWhere is Lisa Wilkinsonâs Gold Logie?â Fordham asked.
âI think itâs very clear, Lisaâs too white,â Stefanovic joked.
âI got a spray tan and everything, still didnât make it,â Wilkinson added.
During his radio interview, Aly was reluctant to speak about the conversation.
âIâm not going to bite,â The Project host told Tilley and Laurie.
âI read it as basically saying, âOh theyâre making a token gesture towards people like Waleed and Lee Lin [Chin] to embrace the multicultural nature of TV these daysâ,â Tilley said.
âThatâs clearly the subtext,â Aly responded.
âBut I think what happened was, it was one of those banter-y things that just went wrong and Karl threw in a comment that other people were not expecting.â
Aly said Wilkinson reached out to him in the days after the furore over their âracistâ remarks to apologise.
âShe texted me and then we spoke a few days later,â Aly said.
âSo you cleared the air with Lisa?â Laurie asked.
âI really like Lisa and sheâs also been incredibly effusive about me in the past ⌠Weâve only met once before,â Aly said.
âI think she [Wilkinson] felt that it just didnât represent who she was.â
âSo youâre happy to just put it up there as a gaffe?â Tilley asked.
âYeah I think so,â replied Aly.
âEspecially when I spoke to her about what was actually going on behind the scenes, because as I recall ⌠wasnât she in a separate studio?
âI donât think she was listening. I reckon she was doing some other thing, heard them mention her name and just went, âOh Iâd better say somethingâ.â
The Today hosts have publicly endorsed Alyâs The Project to take home a Logie.
âWeâre not actually backing ourselves; weâve got a tenner on The Project,â Wilkinson told Fairfax Media.
âWaleed has made a significant contribution to Australian television this year,â Stefanovic said.
âWe would love to see him win.â
