Superstar singer Prince was reportedly found with prescription painkillers on him when he died, according to a new report.

The Sheriff investigating the musician’s death had asked for assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), law enforcement officials reportedly told NBC.

The officials told the news organisation that prescription painkillers were “found in his possession” however officials could not describe what role, if any, the medications could have played in the musician’s death. Autopsy results are not due for release for a number of weeks.

Prince was found dead at his home in Minnesota on April 21. There had been reports he had been battling “flu-like symptoms” in the weeks leading up to his death, forcing the singer to cancel a number of shows.

But since the shock passing, speculation has been rife the musician may have suffered a painkiller addiction relating to injuries he suffered while performing.

Despite Prince’s longtime lawyer saying the musician wasn’t using any drugs “that would be cause for concern”, a number of friends have claimed he used the drug percocet to cope with pain during his energetic performances.

The performer was known for his outrageous shows, during which he almost always wore high heels and ran around the stage.

Ex-girlfriend Sheila E. told People Magazine Prince had a big hip from “jumping off risers for 20 years”.

Aside from the current drug speculation, Prince was for the most part known as a tee-totalling Jehovah’s Witness, who sometimes indulged in a little red wine but not much else.

According to NBC, the DEA will be tasked with finding out where the medication came from and what prescriptions Prince had obtained legally.
