Ewan McGregor has performed a rousing rendition of David Bowie’s song ‘Heroes’ at a tribute concert in Los Angeles.

McGregor, who is not a professional singer but still wowed a generation of Moulin Rouge fans with his musical chops, reprised a key song used in Baz Luhrman’s ‘Elephant Love Medley’: ‘Heroes’.

What the actor lacked in professional training he made up for in passion, belting out the well-known refrain ‘We could be heroes / Just for one day’ in front of a live band.

The 2001 mega-hit musical introduced younger fans to a number of their parents’ generation’s music, including Bowie, Sting, Phil Collins and Paul McCartney.

Bowie also sang the first track on the film’s soundtrack: a haunting version of ‘Nature Boy’.

Also present at the tribute concert was Seal, who performed ‘Bring Me the Disco King’, and actor Gary Oldman, who sang ‘The Man Who Sold the World’.

Bowie’s long time keyboardist Mike Garson was on the verge of tears as he described his relationship with the music legend, according to Billboard.

David Bowie lost his battle with cancer on January 10, just days after his 69th birthday.

The singer had just released his latest album, Black Star, which shot to the top of the charts.

Bowie is survived by his two children and model wife Iman, who this week posted her first comment on Instagram since her husband’s death – an image with the words “Love and gratitude – Iman”.
