One of the comedians behind hit HBO comedy-music series Flight of the Conchords has confirmed writing is underway for a movie based on the popular show.

Jemaine Clement, who plays a fictional version of himself in the series, told Consequence of Sound that writing had started on the show’s silver-screen edition.

Along with his comedic partner Bret McKenzie, the Kiwi pair have built a cult following for their take on life as budding musicians in New York City.

“We have actually started writing one (a movie),” Clement said, although he was less certain about its time frame for release.

“Who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas,” he said.

“We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this,’ it could be this, this, this, this, this.”

In the meantime, the pair will be making new material and plan to support its release with their first tour in five years.

Their intention is to take Flight of the Conchords on the road through North America in late 2015.

If the movie based on the hit show was to take place, it wouldn’t be Clement and McKenzie’s first foray into film.

Clement has worked on a role in the film adaption of Roald Dahl’s book The Big Friendly Giant, while McKenzie was in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies.
