Ryan Reynolds may have had a happy father’s day, but he’s also been accused of being a bad father.

A photo posted by his actress wife Blake Lively on Instagram has received a lot of attention after several comments suggested Reynolds did not know how to correctly carry his daughter, James.

The image, which Lively posted to celebrate American Father’s Day earlier this week, shows Reynolds posing with his daughter strapped to his chest, her feet poking out from under the baby carrier.

Several Instagram users commented beneath the image to air their concerns that Reynolds was doing it all wrong.

“Its not being worm [sic] correctly babies legs should NEVER be through the waist strap and bub is also was too small for this style carrier. Its really not that hard to read the instructions…,” one commenter said.

“This is not a parenting style choice, it is a matter of a child’s SAFETY! The baby is not secure and could literally fall out and get very hurt. I’m glad it’s been pointed out to them, now they know to at least look at the box or better yet read the instruction manual and can now correctly and safely carry their baby,” another wrote.

Pinning down exactly what was wrong with the photo, parenting blog The Stir explained baby James’ position put her at risk of health problems.

“James’ feet are dangling out of the bottom of the carrier, and they’re together. When baby’s feet are pushed together in a carrier, it increases the risk of hip dysplasia, as their little hips are basically pushed out of their sockets,” blogger Jenny Erikson wrote.

“The other thing going wrong here is that James’ head seems to be completely obscured. Babywearers always want to make sure they can see their infant’s face, and keep their airways clear.”

Lively and Reynolds are yet to comment on the furore surrounding the photo.

This is the second time the notoriously private pair have shared a photo of their daughter – Reynolds took to Instagram in May to share a snap of him holding his daughter’s hand.

James was born in January this year, after the 27-year-old took to her blog Preserve.us to announce the pregnancy.
